SUN Thailand

The sustainable development is defined as the development that integrates the factors including economy, environment and society in a balanced way, resulting in the state of sustainability. At present, every sector prioritises this concept by setting the goals of promoting the sustainability of natural resources, economic development and better quality of human’s life, which can then benefit future generations.

The educational institutions are considered a crucial sector of the society which plays a role in developing and providing knowledge through the education process and research. The goals are to produce high quality graduates who can later contribute to the society and transfer knowledge through various mechanisms that can be applied practically for the benefit of the local community, the society, the nation and the world. Therefore, the sustainable development in the educational institutions is very important. The application of the sustainable development concept in the administration policy and the activities of the educational institutions can directly influence the quality of knowledge and the graduates from such institutions. That is because the educational institution is a place that instills knowledge and produces personnel for the community and society.

The above reasons have led to the establishment of the Sustainable University Network. It aims to become an important platform for the universities to determine the policy following the sustainable development concept. The network also encourages the exchange of knowledge and work experiences in promoting the sustainable development, and sets the standard for the performance indicators of the sustainable university. This forms part of raising the standard of the university and stimulating the cooperation among the higher education institutions in the country to serve the sustainable development in the international context. It is also expected that this network can later become a role model for other sectors in the country in the future.
